Description
The Badda Beans from the Madonie Mountains are far more than a simple legume: they represent an authentic natural heritage of Sicily, lovingly grown by Azienda Agricola Sorelle Lo Re.
This product, strictly 100% Sicilian, preserves a valuable biodiversity that was once at risk of disappearing. Each pack tells an ancient story of farming traditions, respect for the rhythms of the land, and family meals shared around warm kitchen hearths.
Origin and cultivation
The Badda bean is cultivated in family gardens in Polizzi Generosa, between 700 and 900 meters above sea level, within the Madonie Natural Park. Cultivation follows traditional methods passed down through generations, including self-produced seeds and sowing practices adapted to the different altitudes of the area.
Characteristics
These beans are medium-small, roundish, and speckled, with a distinct color contrast: ivory with pink or orange spots, or ivory with dark purple, almost black speckles. In local dialect they are called “badda”, meaning “ball,” and they are also known as badda bianca, badda niura, or munachedda.
Flavor and culinary uses
With a savory and intense flavor, Badda beans offer herbal and slightly briny notes, a light astringency, and hints of chestnut and almond in the finish. Perfect for soups, stews, and traditional Sicilian pasta dishes, they also lend themselves well to contemporary recipes.
